First oil painting

First oil painting I've ever done.  More of a practice piece than anything

Oil on canvas, 16x20".  Took about 3.5 hours.

Mountain Lake

A fully-digital painting of a mountain landscape at sunset.

Used a photo as a reference for the sky and mountains, and Bob Ross'd the rest (happy little trees).
Photoshop CS2, ~4 hours

Power Girl

Recently did a fully-digital Power Girl pinup on my shiny Wacom Cintiq 21UX tablet.

Drawn in Manga Studio 4 Debut:

I then realized that the buckle and strap that hold the cape were on the wrong side, so I fixed that up before coloring in Photoshop:

I honestly can't remember the last time I drew superheroes, so this was a lot of fun.

A little more Space Marine colors

Just a wee bit more colors on the Space Marine drawing

I love Atomic Robo! (featuring Doctor Dinosaur)

I love Atomic Robo. Atomic Robo represents what comics seem to have forgotten - fun. Whether this eighty-year-old invention of Nikola Tesla is battling giant robots with evil Nazi brains, running away from Cthonic monsters from outside of the universe, or rescuing soldiers from the vampire dimension, there's a feeling of fun and awesomeness permeating every page and line of dialog.

So here is Atomic Robo being pestered by his nemesis Doctor Dinosaur ("Crystals!").

Now do yourself a favor and go get your grubby hands on some Atomic Robo. Your "awesome meter" will thank you. And remember - always assume it's mummies until proven otherwise.

Polgara the Sorceress

The Belgariad/Malloreon series of books by David and Leigh Eddings are among my absolute favorite stories, and I consider Polgara to be one of the best literary creations of all time.

It took me forever to get a layout that I was comfortable with, but I think I finally got it.

This is a work-in-progress, which I intend to digitally paint.

Art Noveau Vampirella

Vampirella, done in the Art Nouveau style of Alphonse Mucha

I've been an admirer of his work for a while, and Vampirella just seemed like a character that would lend itself well to his style.

Done entirely digitally in Manga Studio 4 Debut.

Sketching and coloring

Whipped up this quick sketch, done entirely digitally in Manga Studio 4 Debut (which I'm liking more and more). Going for an animated feel in the style of the great Bruce Timm (Batman: the Animated Series):

Coloring the "Space Marine" pic. Here's some work-in-progress:

Samurai

Finally, after many years of yearning from afar, I was able to get the Wacom tablet I wanted.
Making a concerted effort to use it at least an hour per day.

This is my quickest digital illustration yet.

Knight in Shining Space Armor

This is a re-envisioning of a sketch I did almost exactly three years ago.

It's fun to go back and revisit old ideas with a fresh perspective.

For comparison, I'm including the old sketch - kept the character designs overall, but changed pretty much everything else

Further Grayscale Studies

Did some more quick grayscale studies, just trying to get the feel for the media - in this case, Copic toner markers, and how they behave and look on standard comic book paper (BlueLine Pro 3-ply board).

Very quick sketches with even quicker gray tones. It's been a long time since I've worked with non-computer media other than black ink, so still have a lot to re-learn (that "Undo" feature doesn't work very well outside of Photoshop).

Grayscale Study

A quick study I did to get a feel for light sources and composition. Tentatively titled "Dejah Alone."

The image is that of Dejah Thoris, Princess of Mars (from the Burroughs series of books), during the 10-year period that John Carter was back on Earth.

Beauty and the Beast

I had originally come up with these characters when I was still in high school.

Now, I finally decided to dust them off and see how I would interpret them in my current style. Overall I'm pretty happy with the result, though I don't know if I'm ready to do anything more with these two.

Then again, a non-emo forbidden love story might be a breath of fresh air in this day and age **cough**Twilight**cough**
